Performance Testing

Objective, data-driven testing to track strength, power, and readiness over time — the same technology used in professional return-to-sport decisions.

Performance Testing at Olympus Lifestyle Co

90%

limb symmetry index is the strength benchmark objective testing is built around, before clearing return to higher-level activity

Guesswork has no place in serious rehabilitation or performance training. Our performance testing uses VALD technology to capture objective, repeatable data on strength, power, and movement quality — giving you and your physiotherapist a clear, measurable picture of progress instead of relying on subjective “does it feel okay” check-ins.

Why objective testing matters

Return-to-sport research is unambiguous: athletes who meet objective strength and performance criteria before returning to sport have dramatically lower re-injury rates than those who return based on time or subjective confidence alone. A strength symmetry benchmark of at least 90% between limbs is one of the most consistently cited markers in the research, and it’s simply not possible to assess accurately without proper testing equipment.

What we measure

  • Strength symmetry — comparing left and right limb strength to identify residual deficits after injury
  • Power and force output — relevant to jumping, sprinting, and change-of-direction sports
  • Landing and movement mechanics — how well you control load and deceleration, a key factor in injury risk
  • Progress over time — objective, repeatable data that shows genuine improvement, not just subjective impression

Why objective testing matters for you

  • Removes subjective guesswork from return-to-sport decisions after injury
  • Tracks strength symmetry and imbalances that can otherwise go unnoticed for years
  • Benchmarks progress against your own baseline, not generic population norms
  • Informs safer, more confident training and rehabilitation decisions at every stage

Who this is for

Whether you’re returning from injury, preparing for a season, or simply want data on where you stand, performance testing gives you and your physiotherapist the numbers to make confident decisions. It pairs naturally with our Injury Prevention Screening and ACL Rehabilitation services, and is a standard part of return-to-sport clearance across our sports physiotherapy programs.

Q & A

Questions about Performance Testing

What technology do you use for testing?

We use VALD performance testing systems — including force plates and dynamometry — to capture objective data on strength, power, and movement, removing the guesswork from return-to-sport and performance decisions.

How often should I get tested?

This depends on your goals — athletes in rehab are often tested every few weeks to track progress against specific return-to-sport benchmarks, while performance-focused clients may test each pre-season or training block to guide programming.

Do I need to be an athlete to benefit?

No — performance testing is valuable for anyone wanting objective feedback on strength and movement, including those recovering from injury, managing a chronic condition, or simply training for general fitness who want to track real progress rather than guessing.

Why is objective testing better than just tracking how I feel?

Subjective confidence doesn't always match objective readiness — research on ACL rehabilitation specifically shows athletes who feel ready but haven't met objective strength benchmarks (like 90% limb symmetry) have substantially higher re-injury rates than those who test and feel ready together.

What happens during a testing session?

You'll complete a series of strength, power, and movement tasks on our VALD force plates and dynamometry equipment — typically taking 45–60 minutes. Results are available immediately, and your physiotherapist will walk you through what the numbers mean for your specific goals.

Can I get a copy of my results?

Yes — your results are stored and tracked over time, so you can see objective progress session to session, and we're happy to discuss or share your data as part of your ongoing program.
